Raising a Chihuahua

Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed weighing 1.5 – 3 kg and 15 – 23 cm in height originating from mexico. They come in two unique coat types. The stmooth-coated Chihuahua and the long-coated Chihuahua. They also come in various colors. Being small breed, they easily surfer dental problems but this can be prevented by regularly brushing their teeth at least 3 times every week. Even though maintenance of a chihuahua is pretty simple, care must be taken to groom a long haired chihuahua weekly by brushing off lose hair, trimming the nails and cleaning the ears.

Chihuahua is quite prone to many diseases one of which is the Parovirus when they are puppies. It is advisable to take your puppy to a vet for the right shots. Although Parovirus is a life threatening organism that kills thousands of dogs in a year it can easily be prevented with proper medication.

Chihuahuas get along well with other pets in the family if introduced soon after birth. They are quite fun to have around, they are loyal and very playful.

When choosing a chihuahua puppy, make sure to ask about the temperament of his parents. This will have a great impact on how hard it is to train them. Typically a Chihuahua’s mood is mostly determined by genetics. They inherit most of their character from their parents. feed your chihuahua proper diet designed for their breed. With proper care, your chihuahua should have a life expectancy of  11-20 years.

You should make sure that your dog is protected during cold and wet days while having in mind that they can be prone to heat stroke too.

A chihuahua body temperature according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), is about 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 to 39.2 degrees Celsius) which is typical for pooches, whereas humans’ normal body temperature is just 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius), with an average range of about 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit (36.1 to 37.2 degrees Celsius)
